Thenmala Butterfly farm.. visit to TBGRI and one of the most beautiful memory is a Visit to Two Ramsar Sites in Kerla... Sahtamudhi and Shastankota...

The Ramsar mission
The Convention’s mission is “the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world”.

The Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, Iran, 1971) -- called the "Ramsar Convention" -- is an intergovernmental treaty that embodies the commitments of its member countries to maintain the ecological character of their Wetlands of International Importance and to plan for the "wise use", or sustainable use, of all of the wetlands in their territories.(http://www.ramsar.org/cda/en/ramsar-home/main/ramsar/1_4000_0__)
The Convention uses a broad definition of the types of wetlands covered in its mission, including lakes and rivers, swamps and marshes, wet grasslands and peatlands, oases, estuaries, deltas and tidal flats, near-shore marine areas, mangroves and coral reefs, and human-made sites such as fish ponds, rice paddies, reservoirs, and salt pans.
Kerla Being a Small state has three Ramsar Site and Maharashtra being such a big state full of natural beauty has none ... that's really a surprising fact.. It seems that we have 6 such sites which fall under Ramsar Convention Criteria .. Vengurla Rocks (Sindhudurg district), Jaikwadi Sanctuary (Aurangabad), Mahul-Sewri mudflats (Mumbai), Nandur Madhmeshwar Sanctuary (Nashik), Thane creek, Ujani dam (Pune)..
The Proposal to declare Thane Creek as Ramsar site already been submitted in Mantralaya..  but no action is taken...

I really want to Appeal to govt. of Maharashtra to understand the ecological importance of the Ramsar Convection and officially declare Thane Creek as 1st Ramsar Site in Maharashtra.. I Appeal to you all my friends to kindly spread the word of awareness amongst society and help Maharashtra to conserve our Wetlands for our ecological health..

Thanks and Regards
